The Birthful Model

Rethinking Prenatals to Support Physiology & Promote Birth Ownership

An Advanced Doula Workshop with Adriana Lozada

March 31st, 2018    9:00 am – 3:00 pm

If birth is not linear, and the body cares little about stages, stations, and centimeters, why do we continue to use this medical language to define and describe a physiological process?

What if instead of focusing on these external postmarks to define progress, we described birth as a series of related and concurrent aspects under our clients’ influence, to help them connect with the process that is unfolding inside their bodies, draw them deeper into labor-land, and increase their confidence and participation in their own birth?

Let’s explore what that new birth model looks like, how it can be applied to situations where physiology is hindered, and what happens within the birthing mom when she’s not waiting for external cues to assess birth flow.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the 4 entwined aspects of physiological birth presented within this model.
  2. Learn how to convey this new birth model to clients during prenatal meetings.
  3. Describe ways in which clients can begin to support these 4 aspects during pregnancy, to later improve labor flow.
  4. Describe ways in which clients can support these 4 aspects during labor, and your role as facilitator.
  5. Reconsider the need for demarcation of a separate pushing state, learn how to convey evidence and physiology to help clients internalize this new concept, and discuss how this can be put into practice within the common hospital approach towards the pushing stage (whether it be directed or not).
  6. Explore birth scenarios where interventions may be suggested or required (prodromal, PROM, inductions, epidurals, GBS+), focusing on how to best support physiology, within the boundaries imposed by the interventions.
  7. Discuss ways in which this new birth model promotes birth ownership, and increases birthing confidence.

 Frequently Asked Questions:

Why should I register ahead of time?

So I know how many folders to print and snacks to get! 🙂 And also so you can take advantage of the Early Bird price.

I will be accepting payment ahead of time via Paypal Friends and Family (no processing fee) or via Credit Card ($4 processing fee). If you’d rather pay via check, send me an email.

Early Bird Price of $80 is in effect until 3/26. After that it goes up to $100.

What if I register and pay, and then can't make it because I'm at a birth?

I get it! That is par for the course in the life of a doula. If you can’t make it, you can transfer your registration to another doula. If that isn’t an option, I can issue a refund, minus a $35 processing fee plus any online or check payment processing fees. Just email me to iron out the details. No refunds issued after March 26th, 2018.

Will there be any handouts?

Yes! You will get access to the handouts I’ve created for my prenatals, plus permission to use them with your clients (as long as you agree to use them as they are, without adapting or changing them, and not to resell them.)

Does this workshop come with CEU's?

I’m working on it! I hope to be able to give you 4 CEUs for this workshop.
